The
Shabak (
Hebrew: שב"כ -
Shabak, an acronym of
Sherut Bitachon Klali שירות ביטחון כללי, in English: General Security Service ), also known outside of Israel by its preliminary name the
Shin Bet, is Israel's internal security service, the Israeli equivalent of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). Its motto is "
מגן ולא יראה", which translates into: "Defender (Shield) who shall not be seen". It is one of three principal organizations of the Israeli Intelligence Community, alongside Aman (the military intelligence of the
Israel Defense Forces (
IDF) and
Mossad (responsible for overseas intelligence work).
