ISRAEL ARMY T SHIRT
(original symbol of the IDF) The IDF was founded May 26, 1948 after the establishment of the state of Israel "to protect the inhabitants of Israel and to combat all forms of terrorism which threaten the daily life". The IDF succeeded the Haganah (in particular, its operational branch, the Palmach) as the permanent army of the Jewish state. It was also joined by former elements of the Jewish Brigade that fought under the British flag during World War II.
The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) (Hebrew: öÀáÈà äÇäÂâÈðÈä ìÀéÄùÀÒøÈàÅìý, Tzva HaHagana LeYisra'el, lit. Defense Army for Israel), commonly known in Israel by the Hebrew acronym Tzahal (öä"ì), are Israel's military forces, comprising the ground forces, air force and navy. It is the sole military wing of the Israel security forces, and has no civilian jurisdiction within Israel. The IDF is headed by its Chief of General Staff, the Ramatkal, subordinate to the Defense Minister of Israel; as of 2010 Lieutenant General Gabi Ashkenazi has served as Chief of Staff since 2007.
